How to Measure Action Figures for Display Cases
This guide shows you exactly how to measure action figures for the right display case, whether your collection is Mint-on-Card (MOC) or loose.
What you need to measure an action figure for a display case
You don’t need fancy tools — just accurate measurements. For best results, use:
- Digital calipers (best for bubble depth and small differences)
- Tape measure or ruler (fine for quick height/width)
- Flat surface + good light (to see the widest points properly)
- Pen + notes (write it down — future you will thank you)
Pro tip: Always measure the widest and deepest points, not the “average” points. Display cases fit the maximum dimensions.
How to measure MOC (carded) action figures
For Mint-on-Card (MOC) figures, you’re measuring the card + blister bubble as one unit. The most common mistake is measuring only the card height and width — then forgetting bubble depth.
Measure these 3 dimensions
- Height (H): bottom of the card to the very top edge.
- Width (W): widest part of the card (often near the middle).
- Depth (D): deepest point of the blister bubble (usually the nose of the bubble, accessories, or weapon trays).
Extra check for “deep bubble” cards
Some lines have deeper blisters or unusual bubble shapes that need a dedicated fit. If your bubble looks chunky or the accessories sit forward, measure depth twice and note the maximum.
If you’re unsure use the Display Armour Case Finder — it’s designed to match the correct case for your line and card style.
How to measure loose action figures (out of box)
Loose figures are all about shape. Measure the figure in the pose you’ll display it in (standing, arms out, weapon held, etc.). The case must fit the widest pose, not the “neutral” pose.
Measure these 3 dimensions
- Height (H): from the base of the feet to the highest point (head/helmet/ears).
- Width (W): widest point (often shoulders, elbows, or accessories).
- Depth (D): deepest point (backpack, cape, tail, weapon, base stand).
If you use a stand
If your figure uses a display stand, base, or flight pole, include it in your measurements. Stands can add a surprising amount to both width and depth.

How much clearance should you add?
A display case should look clean and “precision fit”, but you still need a little breathing room for easy placement and removal. As a general rule:
- MOC carded figures: add roughly 3–6mm clearance (mainly for easy in/out)
- Loose figures: add roughly 5–15mm depending on pose and accessories
If you want the “museum look” (tight and clean), keep clearance small. If you want fast access and flexibility, go slightly larger.

Common measuring mistakes collectors make
- Measuring only height + width and forgetting blister depth (very common with MOC).
- Measuring the card, not the bubble — accessories often stick out further.
- Measuring a loose figure in a neutral pose then displaying it with arms out / weapons in hand.
- Not checking the widest point (some cards flare near the hook or bottom corners).
- Rounding down — always round up to the nearest mm.
Measuring FAQ
What’s the best way to measure a blister bubble depth?
Digital calipers are best. If you only have a ruler, place the card flat on a table and measure from the table to the highest point of the bubble.
How do I know if my figure needs a “line-specific” case?
If your figure is carded (MOC) or has unusual packaging (deep bubbles, wide cards, unique hook shapes), a line-specific case gives the cleanest fit. Use the Case Finder or browse by collection: Display cases by collection.
Do I need clearance for UV protection?
No — clearance is for easy access and preventing rub. UV protection comes from the acrylic itself, not from “air gaps”. See: UV Damage Guide.
If I send you dimensions, what format should I use?
Send H × W × D (Height × Width × Depth) and mention whether it’s MOC or loose. Add a quick front + side photo if you can.
